Product & Trends The Rise of Large Format Tile: Bold Style with Seamless Appeal

Sep 30, 2025

When it comes to tile, bigger really is better. Large-format porcelain tile is one of today’s most in-demand looks for both residential and commercial design. With their expansive scale and clean lines, these oversized tiles offer a modern, high-impact aesthetic that’s as practical as it is beautiful.

Why Large Format Tile?

Choosing tile isn’t just about color or pattern—it’s also about scale. Large-format porcelain tile stands out because it delivers benefits that extend beyond its appearance. From the way it changes how a space feels, to the performance you can count on day after day, here’s why designers and homeowners alike are turning to bigger tile sizes for today’s projects.

Earthen Dream™ large format porcelain tile  offers the most sought-after stone visuals to satisfy classic, sophisticated, and contemporary design styles. Taj Mahal quartzite brings the refined appearance of marble with worldly appeal, while Dolomite channels the movement-rich look of Zebrino marble in parallel streaks of elegance.

 Visual Flow

Large-format tile creates a seamless sense of flow. With fewer grout lines breaking up the surface, rooms appear larger, cleaner, and more open. Whether it’s a small bathroom or an expansive lobby, the uninterrupted look adds a modern sophistication that’s hard to achieve with smaller tiles.

Stream porcelain tile elevates the look and feel of natural travertine with an innovative and unprecedented process that surpasses the limitations of traditional stone.

Modern and Versatile

Bigger tiles bring a contemporary edge to any environment. In spa-like bathrooms, expansive kitchens, elegant hotel lobbies, or even outdoor patios, large-format tile enhances the design with sleek lines and a fresh, uncluttered aesthetic. Its adaptability makes it a favorite for both residential and commercial projects.

What Counts as Large Format Tile?

What counts as “large” in tile has changed dramatically over the years. For a long time, any tile with a side longer than 15 inches was considered large format. That meant popular sizes like 16×16, 18×18, and 20×20 were once considered oversized. Even 12×24, which is now a design staple, was considered on the larger end.

But tile technology keeps advancing, and what once felt big has become standard. According to the updated ANSI guidelines published in 2024, large-format tile is now defined as any tile with at least one facial dimension greater than 23 inches (584 mm). That means tile measuring 24×24, 24×48, and larger are today’s benchmarks for large-format design.

This shift shows how far the industry has come—expanding the possibilities for surfaces that are not only bigger, but also more seamless, modern, and impactful than ever before.
